Access points and zones

See the hotspot servers, interfaces and access points discovered automatically from RADIUS records, and give them the names that should appear in reports.

CustomerLast updated: Open in panel

The Access points page lists, on its own, the hotspot servers, interfaces and access points (APs) that your routers report to RADIUS in guest sessions. You do not create records by hand; you only give each zone the name you use in your venue (for example "Lobby" or "Pool bar").

Today this is discovery and naming only

Per-zone occupancy, dwell time and visit reports are Coming soon. This screen prepares the ground: the names you give are used once the reports are released.

Where zones come from

As guests sign in, the accounting data the router sends for each session is read and three kinds of zone are created:

Type Source
Hotspot server The RouterOS hotspot server name (for example hotspot1)
Interface The interface or bridge the hotspot runs on (e.g. vlan20)
Access point (AP) The AP, when the router sends the AP's MAC in the session
  • The list is refreshed about every 15 minutes. A new zone usually appears within half an hour of the first guest session, and within 24 hours at the latest.
  • On a hotspot that runs on a bridge, the router sends only the bridge name; there is then no AP split, just one interface zone.
  • The AP type appears only when the router passes the AP's MAC address to RADIUS (for example with MAC-based wireless RADIUS). A standard hotspot login usually shows server and interface zones.

No personal data is kept

The list holds no guest MAC address, IP address or username. The MAC shown on an AP zone belongs to the access point device, not to a guest.

Name your zones

  1. Open Access points from the menu. Optionally use Type to list a single type.
  2. Press Rename on the row.
  3. Type the name and choose Save (up to 100 characters).
  • Discovery never changes the name you give; the automatic name stays visible under the row.
  • Use automatic name removes your name and returns to the automatic one.
  • The Sessions column shows new sessions counted during discovery; it is for information only, not a report metric.
  • Every rename is written to the audit log.

Who can see it

  • The page depends on the Analytics module of your package. If your package does not include it, the menu item is shown locked; discovery keeps running in the background and the list is already filled when you upgrade.
  • Among team members, Owner and Manager can see and rename zones; Front desk and Read-only do not see this page. See Team members and roles.
  • If you granted support access, a read-only grant can only view the list; renaming needs a write grant.
